allegheny river
The Allegheny River is one of Pennsylvania’s most diverse fisheries, offering world-class trout, smallmouth bass, and musky fishing. Flowing from Potter County to Pittsburgh, this large river system features tailwater trout fishing below the Kinzua Dam and warmwater fishing in its lower reaches. With cold, oxygen-rich water, the upper Allegheny supports wild and stocked trout, while the middle and lower sections offer excellent smallmouth bass, walleye, and musky fishing.
Fly Fishing the Allegheny River: The most popular fly fishing stretch is the tailwater below Kinzua Dam, where cold, steady flows support a high-quality trout fishery. The Special Regulations Trophy Trout section extends several miles downstream and holds wild and stocked brown and rainbow trout, with some fish exceeding 20 inches.
Further downstream, the river warms and transitions into a smallmouth bass and musky fishery, with some of the best bass action near Tionesta, Franklin, and Oil City.
Hatches & Flies: The Allegheny River features strong mayfly and caddis hatches, especially in the tailwater section. Key hatches include:
Blue-Winged Olives (BWO) – Early spring and fall
Hendricksons & March Browns – Spring
Grannom & Tan Caddis – April through June
Sulphurs – May to early June (excellent evening dry-fly fishing)
Slate Drakes – Summer through fall
Tricos – Late summer mornings
Terrestrials (Hoppers, Beetles, Ants) – Mid to late summer
Best Times & Tactics
Spring and fall offer the best trout fishing in the tailwater section with strong hatches.
Sulphur hatches in May and early June provide fantastic dry-fly action.
Nymphing with Pheasant Tails, Hare’s Ears, Walt’s Worms, and Caddis Pupae is productive year-round.
Streamer fishing is effective for large brown trout and smallmouth bass, especially in higher water.
Summer smallmouth bass fishing picks up downstream, with poppers and streamers being highly effective.
Musky fishing is best in fall and winter, using large streamers and baitfish patterns.
With its scenic beauty, trophy trout potential, and diverse warmwater fishing, the Allegheny River is a premier fly fishing destination in Pennsylvania.
